These intensive courses have a high practical content and are designed for medical officers and biomedical scientists. The courses concentrate on the identification in the laboratory of those parasites of medical importance (both indigenous and imported) likely to be seen in Western Europe. The malaria course concentrates on the biology and differential diagnosis of malaria in the laboratory but other blood-related parasites are also included. Each course comprises a series of mini lectures by specialist staff, followed by extensive practical work.

Course Content:

  • *Examination of faeces for the diagnosis of protozoa and helminths
  • *Malaria - recognition of parasites and other diagnostic approaches
  • *Recognition and diagnosis of haemoflagellates, spirochaetes and filarias
  • Diagnostic problems and other self assessment exercises
  • Parasites in the immunocompromised host
  • Course evaluation

*topics which may include optional activities, providing participants with some control over the balance of faecal and blood parasites studied

Each course includes short presentations by specialist staff followed by practical work at the bench to provide experience in the identification of parasites. Laboratory sessions also provide opportunities for discussion with staff on points of interest to individual course participants.

Please note that this is a paperless course and all students will be given a pen drive with all the course lecture materials on it. Past students have found bringing their laptop with them to LSTM has been beneficial. Also, by having the entire course on a USB pen drive, our students are able to look over the course materials in the evenings if they wish and it serves as a useful reference tool after you have finished the course.
