LSTM was grouped with the University of Liverpool in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), mainly in the Infection and Immunology Unit of Assessment, where we contributed 32 staff out of 48.

The Infection and Immunology return performed very well, with 20% of its activity being rated as 4* (Quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour) and 45% rated as 3* (Quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour).

The work of LSTM staff was instrumental in this assessment, with key LSTM resources & staff being considered by the assessment panel, including LSTM itself, LSTM staff working with the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the Wellcome Trust Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases, the Innovative Vector Control Consortium and the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme. The assessment also considered several high profile LSTM co-ordinated projects (A-WOL, AntiMal) and other grants given to LSTM by the Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust and the EU, among others.

Full details of the Infection and Immunology return can be found on the RAE 2008 website.
